The lab of Design Innovation and Intelligent Manufacturing (DIIM) is a new research group in the department of mechanical engineering at University of Guelph. We are expanding and always seeking excellent and self-motivated graduate students, postdocs, and visiting students/scholars for a wide range of research projects on 3D/4D Printing, Industrial 4.0, Sustainable Manufacturing, CAD/CAM, and Machine Learning. Undergraduate students looking for Capstone Projects or summer research are also welcomed.

Funded PhD (international/domestic) positions available for 2025/2026 entry

Multiple positions are available under the following themes:

  • Position 1: knowledge representation and learning for smart agriculture
  • We are seeking an exceptional PhD candidate to join our research team working at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge Representation, and Smart Agriculture. The position focuses on developing innovative approaches to model, integrate, and apply agricultural knowledge for intelligent decision-making in digital farming systems. Requirements:

  • Hard-working, strong commitment, good communication skills, and teamwork spirit.
  • Knowledge of at least one programming language (C++/C#/Python/Matlab) is mandatory.
  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science/Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
  • Ontology engineering, data mining, knowledge graphs, or knowledge representation.
  • Machine learning or deep learning applied to structured and unstructured data
  • Data fusion and integration of heterogeneous agricultural datasets (e.g., sensor, satellite, soil, weather, text)
  • Other funding support

    Background of Dr. Sheng Yang: Dr. Yang currently is an Associate Professor at the University of Guelph. He obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in early 2019 from McGill University. He received his B.S. and M.S. from Northwestern Polytechnical University in 2011 and 2014 respectively. Prior to joining the University of Guelph, he did postdoctoral research at McGill University and Brunel University London as ACU Blue Charter Fellow. His research interests include additive manufacturing, CAD/CAM, sustainable design, and Industry 4.0. His work is mostly published in top-tier design and manufacturing journals. Some major awards/honor he received include the prestigious ACU Blue Charter Fellowship, Best Paper Award, Featured Article Recognition, McGill Engineering Doctoral Award, and Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad.
